Why do low wattage amps have high wattage speakers?

View Cart Speaker Cross Reference For awhile now people have been asking what my speakers are similar to in the Celestion line. For the most part, the answer is none. With that said, here are the closest comparisons to Celestion models for those who need a cross reference. These were the most popular speakers made in the old days, and were commonly referred to as “Greenbacks”. These speakers had a 35 oz magnet that produced more midrange than low end or high end, resulting in the pronounced mid range hump that sounded dark to many players. Marshall used these extensively in their stack cabs, although the G12H30 “Greenback” model was also very popular.

The demand for the original series never waned as a result. The G12M in 16 ohm version was originally most-commonly labeled as a T coded speaker and rated at 20 watts. The sound of the G12M with its ceramic magnet and easy cone movement provided plenty of midrange crunch along with nice compression of the low-end when the speakers were pushed. In other words, these were fantastic rock and blues speakers and sounded very different from the Alnico type speakers used in other Marshalls as well as Voxes.

The G12M was much more full-bodied in tone and retained good clarity.

Worn or mismatched speakers in wattage or impedance ohms are one thing, but different speaker designs also provide dramatic changes in tone and response for guitarists.

And this is an area that is all too often neglected. Ask many guitarists, “What speakers do you use? Many of our reader questions become the basis of new articles written and this is certainly an example of one of those. These topic areas can be discussed in simple terms or they can be more scientific when one chooses to dig deeper. There are also a plethora of other topic areas that we could cover in the future that go into depth about calculation of speaker and cabinet design, magnet types, cones, and how they each impact tone.

But, for the sake of this primer, lets first offer a rundown of the most well known Celestion speakers that have each contributed to make up “The British Sound” over the years. This will be a general guide because even within each speaker type listed, there are various changes that have been made throughout its life. Sometimes changes were made for reasons of durability, sometimes for cost-considerations, and other times for both reasons.

Regardless of these factors, while a G12M 25 watter from these two eras for example will sound different, they still inherently contain the basic characteristic tones and voicing of a G12M. And THAT basic tone character is what this article will describe from each of the various speakers. Greenbacks and H30s do not get along. That man was a liar! I love to experiment with speakers; the way they shape the voice of the amp, alter the feel of the guitar, as different frequencies are attenuated and emphasized. It was a powerful, clear bass — tight, not muddy — but just way too much of it.

For starters, 15 watts of tube power goes a very long way; it is just as loud as my w solid state amp. With the AC15 I can barely get the master volume past the halfway mark if I have top boost on full. The AC15 has a lot less clean headroom than the AC30 and for me this is a very good thing as I can get to that sweet creamy overdrive much sooner, without having to blow the lid off my house.

With the AC30 you really need to crank it to get to the good stuff or you have to resort to using an overdrive pedal, which denies you access to your straight up tube tone. Sure having a tube rectifier might lend the AC30 some slightly better tone, but at a large cost. Not being able to have the amp on standby while the tubes warm up can risk damaging the tubes, and they are expensive things to be constantly replacing.

Even though the amp sounded brilliant the day I bought it, over the years I have modded the thing to really open it up and squeeze more tone out of it. But once the speaker broke in it really sang and I was more than satisfied with it. A lot of people hated the sound of the stock Wharfedales and replaced them without even letting them break in, which is silly.
